Quiet study, no smoking
and "Please pardon the in-
terruption" all marked the
entrance of Mr. Paul Flem-
ing as Wilmington's new
principal in 1984. He told us
this was his only job and it
was the most important job
in the world to him, and
many other pearls of wisdom
over the P.A. system. We ad-
ded bathroom monitors to
the staff and somehow lost
the "thought for the day."
His office is bolstered by the
capable talents of Mrs.
Catherine Souza, left, and
Mrs. Pat Gearty, lower right.

18

The biggest news of the day in
homeroom is who's on the appoint-
ment list for that day. Better known
as "the hit list," it is presided over
by Mr. Ed Woods and Mr. Jack
Lynch, assistant principals at
W.H.S. New to the school our
senior year were the big wooden
benches where the "guilty until pro-
ven innocent" waited in the outer
office under the sympathetic eyes of
Mrs. Lorraine Clark.

TEACHER
OF THE YEAR

MRS. LESLEY BASMAJIAN

The class of 1987 is proud to honor Mrs. Lesley Basmajian as its
'Teacher of the Year." Mrs. Basmajian has been an educator in
the field of social sciences during our four years at Wilm-
ington High School. She has taught us about the past in
U.S. History and the present in American Government.
She has taught us about the laws and their applications
and about cultures and international relations. But,
most importantly, she has taught us to be proud of
our heritage and to respect the country which
gives us the opportunity to be the best that we
can be. The Class of 1987 thanks Mrs.
Basmajian and extends its warm wishes
to her for the years to come.

Mrs. Basmajian, "The future
looks good!"

CHAMPS

The team had an outstanding year.
Even though Eric Braciska was injured
late in the season, his spirit helped to
guide the team on to victory. George
Fuller, Rob DeSantis, Jim Moynihan,
and Mike Lombard all turned in
outstanding performances. Al Corrieri,
Jim Pelletier, and Mark Eddy also lent a
great deal of expertise to the team's suc-

fervor that Wilmington was awarded
the title of "most spirited" by the
league.

Salutatorian Speech
by Missy Frey

High school is an incredible time. You wouldn't think it would be so tough. But everyone knows that when you're a
teenager, high school is a big deal. Imagine having to wear the right clothes say the right things, act the right way, have the
right friends, and so on and so on. Everything you do has to be "right." Conform and be safe. Be an individual and risk be-
ing rejected.

High school is the eternal quest to fit in. From the first day of Freshman year, one is checked out; and simply by looks and
an all-important eighth grade reputation, one is judged as either acceptable or otherwise. For those judged unacceptable,
high school proves to be four years of feeling out of place, inferior, angry and confused — all due to the pressure to conform.

Everyone wants to fit in. It's beneficial and safe. And everyone, at one time or another, goes against his own feelings to be
like the rest. Yet while conforming may bring about acceptance, the ends do not justify the means. This desire for security
sometimes squashes the true person.

We're out of high school now. We're entering the adult working world and the world of higher education, where the
pressure to conform is not as great. Granted, it's still there; it's everywhere. But it's nowhere as intense as it is in high school.
Graduating opens up many new options and also frees us from the prevailing attitude to be like everyone else. In the upcom-
ing years, most people will learn that being different does not always mean being rejected. People will begin to accept.

It is this acceptance which will allow us to grow as people. Without the constraining pressure to conform, we can en-
counter and learn from the hidden individuality in those around us. We can be ourselves, enjoy our independence, and
know that we are unique and important. As Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, "Insist on yourself; never imitate."

To my friends and classmates of the class of 1987, enjoy life, be yourselves, and I wish you all the success and happiness in
the world. Good luck and God bless.

Jeff St. Onge CLASS ESSAYIST

At High School graduations, we often hear a lot about success.

It's not a new subject — as early as 500 BC, Confucius said, "Success depends on previous preparation, and without such preparation,
there is sure to be failure." In the early twentieth century, Arthur Brisbane offered his interpretation of success — "The dictionary is the only
place where success come before work." Later that century, W. C. Fields countered, "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Then quit.
There's no use being a damn fo*. . -jout it."
We conjure up thoughts of ourselves in ten years, twenty years, and even forty years. At the ten year mark, we see ourselves with beautiful
spouses
sports cars
and young children.
After twenty years we think of ourselves with children a bit older. We've got a home of our own and we've traded in those sports cars for station
wagons. After forty years our children are fully grown
and educated

and leading lives of their own, continuing what we are starting today. And so it goes.
But just where do we picture ourselves in life? At the helm of a yacht, or behind a desk with a computer?
Whatever successes we have tomorrow depend on the effort we exert today.

Our four years in high school have prepared us to enter the real world. Whether we go on to further our education or not it is now our respon-
sibility to achieve whatever level of success we envision.
It is we that will have to earn a living.
It is we that will have to provide for our children.
It is we that will determine how successful we will be.
Theodore Roosevelt once said,

"The average man who wins what we call success is not a genius.
He is a man who has merely
the ordinary qualities
that he shares with his fellows,
but who has developed those ordinary qualities
to a more than ordinary degree."
The task is clear.
The Rewards are there.
The rest is up to us.

ANDREA QUINN: VALEDICTORY ADDRESS

Mr. Fleming, Mr. Woods, Administration, Faculty,
Honored Guests, Friends:

Good afternoon and welcome to the 1987 Wilmington High School graduation ceremony. I'd like to thank everyone here for
their support of us over the years and for making it possible for all of us to be here. I'd also like to offer my classmates my sincere
congratulations on their achievements and wish them good luck in the future. We finally made it, guys!

Eleanor Roosevelt once said, "The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams." That is my message to
everyone here today. Believe in your dreams and, by doing so, believe in yourself. Take your dreams and make them reality, for
no dream is too big if you are willing to work for it. Accept the challenge of your drams and challenge yourself to do your best, to
achieve your goals. Realize the importance of a single person — know that you, even though you are only one, can change not
only your future, but the future of others as well.

All of us have had drams at one point in our lives. What about this dream we are living right now — graduation? I bet some of
you thought this dream would never come true, right? But we all kept pushing and working and here we are today, the 1987
graduating class, with a whole audience here just for us. You have achieved this dream — how many more can you achieve in
your lifetime? Don't ever limit yourself — go out into the world and do your best. My mom always told me, "All you can do is the
best you can do," and this is where her advice got me. Please take her advice — do your best to achieve your dream or goal.
Work for that goal, but never harbor doubt. Don't look for the reasons why you cannot achieve your goal — rather, decide how
you will achieve that goal and how you will feel when you succeed.

Dream big, but don't dream too big. Challenge yourself, but don't set yourself up for failure. Don't, however, be afraid of failure.
Be willing to take risks and if you fail, do so graciously. One failure means little in comparison to many successes. Always be will-
ing to work a little harder, a little longer, because only by giving a dream your all can you succeed. Believe in your dreams, but
more importantly, believe in yourself. Believe in the good you can do as only one person. Never forget your individual importance.

As Helen Keller said, "I am only one; but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; I will not refuse to do
the something I can do." Please remember: you are important even standing alone. Accept the challenge of your dreams and
thus accept the challenge of believing in yourself. Thank you very much.

Class History Class of 1 987 by Richard Smith

All Wilmington High School's a stage, and the class of 1987 merely players. They have their exits and entrances, and all students
in their time play many parts, his acts being four years. First the freshmen, arriving one day earlier than the rest, to meet their first
principal, Mr. DeRosa, and class advisor, Ms. Dable. They are quickly introduced to Wildcat school spirit by a football victory on
Thanksgiving, and by the varsity hockey team, and their Division II State Final game at Boston Garden. Their real treat was yet to
come, however; a free trip to a real circus at Shriner's Auditorium, courtesy of an oil spill. Despite the adversity, they have sur-
vived the dreaded freshman year; but change is in the air. Then come the sophomores, greeted early in September by a man
named Paul T. Fleming, known worldwide for his brief interruptions. He re-introduced the revolutionary corridor pass and a new
drug policy. They elect a class president called Spaz and Miss Fitz is advisor of their class. Anyone who is confused by these
changes take heart, I would be too, "if I were you, thank God I'm not!" Still more changes would be to come as the plan to
renovate is passed. With the end of the year comes a celebration for making it "Halfway There." Next are the juniors, met not on-
ly by updated changes to the student handbook, but a pending change of scenery as the school prepares to undergo
reconstruction. Ms. Schmidt becomes advisor number three. She helps the class to be a successful junior prom at the Sheraton
Rolling Green. As a bit of foreshadowing, they are put through a wild "senior week" which included ten fire drills in one day. As
some of the dust from the hard working construction workers begins to settle they are out of school early and gone for the sum-
mer, not knowing what will be in store when they return in the fall. Then come the seniors, a year older and feeling a year wiser.
Mr. Fleming's plea for school spirit is weakened by the football team's perfect record, but quickly turned around by MVC champ
in basketball. Eric and Denise would reign at homecoming, and Jen, Denise, Missy, and Tina continue their work as class officers.
Seniors are given special passes to go to a lounge that is never open. After the hectic time of applications, the senior slide of-
ficially begins, highlighted by an 87 Day party, and the Senior Prom at the Colonial Hilton.

Last scene of all, that ends this strange eventful history, is senior sign out. We leave the halls of WHS forever, and take these
many memories with us always.

Thank you.

There are places I'll remember

all my life
Though some have changed
Some forever — not for better

some are gone, and some

remain.
All these places have their

moments
With all lovers and friends

I still can recall
Some are dead and some are
living —

in my life

I've loved them all

— John Lennon and
Paul McCartney
